Trump’s war on wind energy keeps getting more expensive for taxpayers. For years, Trump has had a very public dislike of wind turbines dating back to Scotland, where he fought offshore wind farms near one of his golf courses because they would affect the view. He lost those court battles, but the grudge appears to have outlived them.
Now that opposition is shaping federal policy. This week, the Trump administration announced it would pay $765 million to Invenergy in exchange for surrendering four offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Maine. The company says it will instead invest in natural gas plants and geothermal energy.
But this isn’t the first payout. Earlier this year, the administration agreed to reimburse TotalEnergies nearly $1 billion (about $928 million) to abandon offshore wind projects off New York and North Carolina and redirect those funds into oil, gas, and LNG development in the U.S.
Altogether, taxpayers have now committed roughly $1.7 billion to pay companies not to build offshore wind projects. Other firms, including Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind, have reportedly entered similar agreements as well.
