This week the Trump administration released relaxed detention standards to “reduce the burden” on contractors running its lockups. Basically make detention centers cheaper to operate and more profitable for the contractors running them. The new ICE detention standards allow greater use of AI for communicating with detainees and a system that pays some detainees just $1 a day for work inside the facilities.
This comes after years of reports, lawsuits, inspections, and congressional investigations raising concerns about medical care, mental health services, staffing shortages, delayed treatment, and preventable deaths in immigration detention facilities. Many detainees already struggle to access adequate healthcare when they need it.
Now the response appears to be even more automation, fewer human interactions, and more reliance on AI. And a labor system that pays some detainees just $1 a day for work that helps keep these facilities running.
This is a detention system being optimized to reduce costs at every level. If people in government custody are already facing concerns about healthcare, legal access, and basic services, replacing more human contact with technology while paying $1-a-day labor raises a major concern. The priority isn’t care and due process, it’s making detention as inexpensive as possible to operate so these businesses can make more profit.
