This should concern every American, regardless of political party. California Governor Gavin Newsom says on X that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have become targets of a Department of Justice investigation directed by the Trump administration. According to Newsom, federal agents have been knocking on the doors of family friends and former employees, requesting records and what he described as “random documents.”
Newsom states investigators are not pursuing evidence tied to a specific crime, but are instead searching for one. He stated that agents have contacted people in his circle despite no public allegations of wrongdoing against his wife, who has spent years advocating on behalf of women and girls through public service and nonprofit work.
This raises serious questions about the use and abuse of federal power. The justice system is supposed to investigate crimes based on evidence not investigate individuals first and hope to uncover something later. That principle exists to protect everyone, regardless of ideology.
Whether you agree with Gavin Newsom politically is beside the point. In a democracy, government agencies should never be used as tools to intimidate political opponents or their families. Trump has made these investigations a political weapon rather than impartial searches for justice, the rights of every American are at risk.
