The Trump administration’s new Acting Director of National Intelligence, Bill Pulte, has begun the mass firing of employees at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), with reports indicating that hundreds of staff positions are being eliminated. The Trump administration say they are “destroying the deep state,” but it increasingly appears to be about loyalty rather than qualifications and experience. ODNI was created after 9/11 to improve coordination and information sharing between America’s intelligence agencies. Removing experienced career staff risks weakening that coordination and increasing political influence within agencies that are intended to operate independently.
