The Trump administration weaponized the FCC against ABC because Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about Melania Trump.

Kimmel called her an “expectant widow” during a bit about the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump lost it. Called for Kimmel to be fired. And when Disney refused, FCC chair Brendan Carr ordered all eight ABC-owned stations to file for early broadcast license renewal, years ahead of schedule. Licenses that weren’t due until 2028 or later. They must now be renewed within 30 days by May 28, 2026 or else.

Carr didn’t even bother hiding the real reason. He said outright that ABC could “find ways to take action on Kimmel” or “there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” That’s not regulation. That’s a threat.

The official paperwork says the review is about Disney’s DEI practices. Nobody believes that. This is the president using a federal agency to punish a TV network for airing a comedian who makes fun of him. It’s the same playbook he used last fall when Kimmel commented on Charlie Kirk’s death and ABC suspended the show for six days under the same kind of pressure.

Disney is pushing back this time. Their statement invoked the First Amendment and said they’re prepared to fight through “appropriate legal channels.” Legal experts say the standard for actually revoking a broadcast license is nearly impossible to meet, and any real fight would drag on for years. Kimmel, for his part, kept the show going Tuesday night without missing a beat.

But the point was never really to pull the license. The point is intimidation. Make broadcasters think twice before airing criticism. Make them wonder if the joke is worth the legal fees. That’s how you get government-aligned media without ever having to pass a law. This is what press freedom erosion looks like in practice.
