THE DOJ JUST INDICTED AND SUED THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER FOR FRAUD AND I HAVE THE INDICTMENT (DOCUMENT INCLUDED)

Note the timestamp at the top of the document: 4:23pm. The ink isn’t even dry on the clerk’s stamp and I not only am already writing about it, but I have the *just filed* indictment for you! :~)

The DOJ is suing the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for fraud, alleging that the SPLC was actually funding people in the very hate groups that they hated and were exposing.

Now, to be clear, even the indictment says that the individuals in these hate groups which they were funding were “field sources” or, in other words, informants.

It seems to me that paying informants is very common practice among all sorts of law enforcement and legal agencies. Where the DOJ seems to have a problem (read as “hook to go after the SPLC”) is that, according to the DOJ indictment, the SPLC didn’t let donors *know* that some of their money was going towards paying people in these hate groups. Sure, paying them to *help take those groups down*, but as we have all seen in the past year, the DOJ doesn’t really have a firm grasp on who are the bad guys and who are the good guys.

So, a non-profit organization paying informants to undertake dangerous work: bad. The *government* paying informants to squeal: good. Paying a U.S. border czar in a sting operation $50,000 and *letting him keep it*: ultra-good. Got it.

According to the 14-page indictment (included for Notes from the Front members) “[T]he SPLC opened bank accounts connected to a series of fictitious entities. The covert nature of the accounts allowed the SPLC to disguise the true nature, source, ownership, and control of the fraudulently obtained donated money the SPLC paid the field sources. In order to keep the scheme going, the SPLC made a series of false statements related to the operation of the accounts.”

Now, I’m not an expert on banking regulations, so it’s possible that opening an account under an assumed name is some sort of no-no; or maybe not because for all we know they had filed DBAs for each of the accounts.

But aside from that, the *only* way that I can see a fraud lawsuit moving forward, let alone going against the SPLC, is if, well, there is actually fraud with respect to what the donors were told their donations would be used for, versus what they were actually used for.

And here is *exactly* what the donors are told about how their donated dollars will be used, straight from the SPLC website:

“There are two ways you can help us fight hate and discrimination: donating to the Southern Poverty Law Center or the SPLC Action Fund (or both!)

Donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center are tax deductible and will support our research, litigation, advocacy and public education efforts.

Gifts to the SPLC Action Fund will advance our work by giving us greater flexibility to engage in legislative battles at every level of government and to support critical ballot initiatives. These gifts are not tax deductible.”

Congratulations, Trump and Blanche! I’m guessing you just caused a whole lot more donations to flow into the SPLC Action Fund!

The only question is where will the SPLC find lawyers to represe..oh, wait… guess who has a whole lot of lawyers on their staff! Go on, guess. Now guess how experienced those SPLC lawyers are compared to the wet-behind-the-ears boobs at the DOJ. Go on, guess.

Silly DOJ, lawsuits are for grownups.
