OPM says it’s optional to answer the essay loyalty questions when applying for federal jobs. That’s not true. In many cases, applicants can’t even submit their applications if they leave the essay fields blank.

One individual reported being unable to apply for positions at the Justice Department, OSHA, and the Defense Health Agency without completing the loyalty questions.

OPM responded claiming agencies are changing the default setting to make the questions required on their own. “If agencies are choosing to require the questions, contrary to OPM guidance, that’s not our decision.”

You shouldn’t have to pledge loyalty to the Trump administration or any political figure to get a federal job.
