On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free when Union troops arrived in Galveston to enforce emancipation. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder that rights and justice are not always delivered equally or immediately. Progress has never been automatic. It has always required people willing to stand up, speak out, and push this country to live up to its ideals.
