NO! THE SUPREME COURT DID NOT JUST ALLOW PEOPLE TO BRING GUNS INTO YOUR HOME WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION!

Today the Supreme Court handed down a decision about guns. This decision is being reported by some as “People can bring guns onto your private property without permission.”
This is not accurate.
What the Supreme Court decision (included for Notes from the Front members) *actually* says – that is, the practical effect of it – is that if you have private property that is *open to the public* – such as, you know, a store – and if you *don’t* post “No guns allowed”, well then, guns allowed in terms of concealed-carry with a permit.
The case arose out of the state of Hawaii passing legislation saying that people with a conceal-carry license could not carry into a privately-owned space that is open to the public, such as a store, unless they had the *express* permission of the owner of that property, such as a sign saying “Guns welcome”.
So, today’s decision means that states cannot pass blanket laws prohibiting people with a conceal-carry permit from entering an ‘open to the public’ private property if the owner of the property did not themselves say “no guns allowed”.
Put another way, the state doesn’t get to decide, the property owners do (in fact many commentators are saying that this is really a property rights case, but it was brought up as a 2nd Amendment case). Because, says the Supreme Court, such a blanket ban *by the state* on lawful gun owners who have a conceal carry license violates the 2nd Amendment.
Of course there is a lot more to the opinion (76 pages, all told), but that is the gist of it.
