NO! THE ADMINISTRATION ISN’T ‘UNCITIZENING’ PEOPLE BORN IN THE U.S.! THIS ONLY APPLIES TO *NATURALIZED* CITIZENS!

I want to clear up the misinformation that is going around based on headlines like the one in this screenshot.

So to be *very* clear: GENERALLY SPEAKING IF YOU WERE BORN IN THE U.S. YOUR CITIZENSHIP *CANNOT* BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.

PERIOD.

For the most part the *only* way a natural-born citizen of the United States can ‘lose’ their citizenship is if *they choose to give it up*, known as ‘renouncing it’, such as if you choose to become a citizen of another country and that country doesn’t allow you to have dual citizenship, so you have to renounce your U.S. citizenship.

(There are some *very* narrow, limited exceptions to the “the U.S. can’t take your natural-born citizenship away” rule, such as if you commit treason, or under certain situations if you run for public office in another country or join the military in another country. But generally speaking your natural-born U.S. citizenship is for life unless *you* choose to give it up.)

The administration’s action to which these headlines refer is that the administration has announced it is ramping up enforcement of its ability to denaturalize *naturalized* citizens. In other words, people who were born outside of the U.S., and who came to the U.S., and *became* U.S. citizens. That process of becoming a U.S. citizen is called ‘naturalization’. And a naturalized citizen can be denaturalized (lose their citizenship) if they commit certain crimes, or obtained their citizenship through fraud.

According to news reports, the DOJ is now going after naturalized citizens who have committed crimes and who are from, among other countries, Bolivia, China, Colombia, Gambia, India, Iraq, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Somalia and Uzbekistan.

One news report says that some of the people targeted include “a Colombian-born Catholic priest convicted of sexually assaulting a minor; a man born in Morocco with alleged ties to al Qaeda; a Somali immigrant who pleaded guilty to providing material support to al Shabaab, and a former Gambian police officer allegedly involved in war crimes… individuals who allegedly used false identities to apply for immigration benefits and a man who allegedly entered into sham marriages to commit immigration fraud.”

So, when you see someone saying “Trump is going to take away peoples’ citizenship”, please correct them. The stuff going on is bad enough without people being whipped into a stressball frenzy by misinformation.

Remember, a stressed, confused populace is a weak populace. Truth and facts make a strong populace.
