Is Congress finally growing a spine?

A group of lawmakers warned the Trump administration that officials could face fines and criminal prosecution if they move forward with Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington without approval from Congress.

The warning comes after Trump’s administration recently told a court that it can do whatever it wants as long as it moves quickly enough because the courts are slow. Lawmakers appear increasingly concerned that controversial projects could be rushed forward and completed before judges ever have a chance to rule.

Federal law gives Congress authority over major construction and monuments in the nation’s capital. Lawmakers argue that bypassing that process isn’t just controversial it violates the law.
