Elon Musk’s xAI has expanded their gas-powered infrastructure fueling its AI operations in Memphis without permits. According to recent reports, the company has added 11 more methane gas turbines since mid-May, bringing the total at the site to at least 57 turbines. These units have been operating without the permits normally required for major industrial emissions sources. The scale is enormous. The turbines are estimated to generate enough electricity to power roughly 738,000 to 950,000 homes. The facility is emitting more than five times the nitrogen oxide pollution produced by nearby Memphis International Airport, which had previously been one of the region’s largest pollution sources.
