A RANT ABOUT ANONYMOUS ACCOUNTS
Yesterday one of the anonymous “alt national (etc)” accounts on Facebook posted the following *misleading* and factually *incorrect* statements. This is what I keep warning people about, and this is a perfect example. I saw it because one of my followers tagged me in their comment, asking “I wonder if Anne P. Mitchell, Esq. has any insight on this decision – she always provides rational, unsensational legal analysis of cases that attract media attention.”
Here is what that anonymous account said yesterday, and my response below:
Anonymous Alt account: “This is horrible. The Trump administration just won the right to remove and replace a slavery exhibit at the site of the nation’s first executive residence in Philadelphia. A federal appeals court ruled that the administration can move forward with changes to the exhibit, reversing a lower court decision that had ordered the National Park Service to restore displays removed earlier this year. The exhibit focused on the enslaved people who lived and worked at the presidential residence while George Washington occupied the home.”
My response: “Steve Clark UPDATE: I just found the 3rd Circuit opinion and order, which actually came out yesterday. What this order *actually* says is that the City of Philadelphia did not have standing, and thus the District Court did not have jurisdiction. The reason that Philadelphia does not have standing is because the National Park Service actually owns, outright, the President’s House. Further, and what you weren’t being told here, even though it was made clear in the opinion and order which I’m *sure* the person posting behind the anonymous account read (right? they did read it before posting about it, right?), the NPS had *new* displays which it was ready to install before ordered not to by the injunction, but which you can see at this link and which you will be surprise to see (as was I, truth be told) that it *includes* the history of slavery, the underground railroad, etc.: https://perma.cc/33C5-YHQS
As usual, these alt anonymous accounts are spin-doctoring what really happened to generate click- and share-bait, leading thousands and thousands of people to be misled, and triggered emotionally, with their hyperbolic rhetoric. This is *not at all* them “winning the right to remove and replace”. THIS is why I keep saying to get your information from sources where you *know* who is writing it, and where you *know* their credentials. (Fully expect to be blocked now by this anonymous alt account, please prove me wrong.)”
The thing is, as of the time of this writing *30,000* people had reacted to that misinformation on the anonymous alt account, and more than *2500* people had shared that misinformation far and wide.
And *this* is what I’m talking about when I say that accounts – especially anonymous accounts purporting to be on the left, are doing just as much damage as the accounts on the right that post the *same* information! They are getting people confused and discouraged by making it sound as if this administration is both more powerful, and getting away with more, than it really is. They are sending out the *same* messaging as the far right! They are *doing the far right’s work for them* They may as well be on the far right’s payroll. (Hrrm….)
