A FATHERS’ DAY MESSAGE FROM ME

To all the fathers in my life, and most especially to those single fathers with whom I have had the privilege of you entrusting your relationship with your children to me while we worked together to ensure that your children were able to continue to have you in their lives, happy Father’s Day! And to all the single fathers out there who are unable to spend this day with your children, I see you. I feel you. You are no less a father – their father – despite not being with them; never let anyone diminish you or tell you differently.

These are pictures of my father as a baby, as a young man at Princeton, and with me as a baby (he is “visiting” baby me at my mother’s apartment, I didn’t go to live with him until I was about three years old), up through my graduation from undergrad (the picture with the cake, with which I surprised him – yes it was my graduation party, but it was close to his birthday – the cake says “Happy Birthday, Bill” in Russian). Little did I know that it would be the last time I saw him, he died unexpectedly a few weeks later, as I was packing up my home to drive from New York to California for law school. But he lived to see me graduate Summa from undergrad, to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa (which was important to him), and to know that I had gotten into Stanford law school. These things were all very important to him, and I could *never* have done them (let alone struck out for myself at the age of 11) without the grounding that he gave me, and the confidence he instilled in me, when I lived with him from ages 3 through 11. And now that I am a parent I understand that it’s much easier to leave this world knowing that your children are doing well. I love you dad, you are always with me. ❤️
