Serious question. Doesn’t our government already know who’s a citizen?
The Social Security Administration, the State Department, DHS, the DMV they all have this data. In fact, the SAVE Act itself uses federal databases to verify citizenship for other parts of the bill. So the government can look it up when it’s convenient, but suddenly can’t when it comes to registering you to vote?
Automatic voter registration already works in 24 states and D.C. When you get or renew your driver’s license, your information is automatically sent to election officials you’re registered unless you opt out. DMVs already verify citizenship when issuing IDs. It’s not a radical idea. It’s a proven system that removes the burden from citizens and puts it where it belongs on the government.
Instead, Congress wants to make every American show up in person with paper documents to prove something Washington already knows. That’s not election integrity. That’s voter suppression with extra steps.
