Remember that for every time you look at someone and think “How could they possibly believe that?” there is someone “over there” looking at you thinking the same thing about you, and neither position is helpful. (NOTE: Closing comments for everybody, but leaving post up so people can see what was being said, that is the comments that I didn’t delete. And I can’t believe I have to repeat this but DO NOT message me or post the comment you wanted to post here on another post! That’s a violation of my rules and will get you automatically blocked.)

“for every time you look at someone and think “How could they possibly believe that?”” – I typically have a fairly good idea! 🤣 That’s not something I ask myself very frequently.😁

This is a hard reality for my mind to comprehend- how in the world do 2 actual opposites actually believe they are BOTH RIGHT?? There is only ONE right side in history- MAGA is NOT it! I think it is going to take something awful, like 9/11, to unite this country again, sadly.

it’s difficult, but I am always trying to understand them (maga). You can’t just demonize them, from their perspective, they are right, good and justified in their position. It is a battle for the moral high ground

Exactly this. It’s not a defense of MAGA to accept that they believe as passionately as we do. I’ve only ever had meaningful exchanges with his supporters when the subject is specific policy instead of admiration for him.

So true and so hard to bear in mind. But so true.

Thank you for the reminder. One of the problems is that different people see different media. Also, emphasis on different values (such as “law enforcement” and “security” versus “compassion” and “diversity”. Impossible as it seems, we need to reach for common ground.

I think that’s a false equivalency, but I may be biased. I would agree we are all delusional to some degree. But I think the degree is not symetrical.

What is really troubling for me is how can they think shooting and killing Renee Good, detaining men women and children without a warrant, lobbing highly irritating chemical tear gas at people for exercising their right to protest is moral and ethical. It’s gone too far and if they cannot see that then I think think that is a hugely moral problem

And yet, there is a difference between right and wrong.

Well, for me, morality wins everytime
