Idaho Republicans have passed a bill that would hit Boise with $2,000 in fines every single day it flies a Pride flag and it’s now one signature away from becoming law.
Here’s the backstory Idaho passed a law last year restricting which flags government buildings could fly, but forgot to include any enforcement mechanism. Boise found a workaround the city council voted to officially designate the Pride flag as an official city flag, keeping it flying outside City Hall.
So Republican Rep. Ted Hill of Eagle went back and drafted a new bill specifically designed to close that loophole. House Bill 561 would impose a $2,000 daily fine per offending flag, and would give Attorney General Raúl Labrador authority to enforce the law through lawsuits. Hill didn’t hide the target he called Boise’s decision to keep flying the flag “lawless, insubordinate and intolerable.”
