Anthropic launched legal action against the Department of Defense, contesting the Pentagon’s move to classify the company as a “supply chain risk” and escalating a bitter ongoing standoff over artificial intelligence’s place in military operations.
The AI company filed two lawsuits (one before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and a second before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals) contending that the Defense Department misused the “supply chain risk” designation as ideologically motivated payback.
The conflict stems from Anthropic’s refusal to support certain defense applications of its technology, including broad domestic surveillance programs and weapons systems capable of lethal action without meaningful human control.
